内容简介：
　　Theories of reference have been central to analytic philosophy, and two views, the descriptivist view of reference and the causal-historical view of reference, have dominated the field. In this research tradition, theories of reference are assessed by consulting one's intuitions about the reference of terms in hypothetical situations. Early work explored intuitions about reference in Westerners and East Asians. After a brief review of, this early work, I will examine the recent objections to this work and describe some additional work done in response to these objections.

主讲简介：
　　Edouard Machery教授是科学哲学研究重镇美国匹兹堡大学科学史与科学哲学系教授，认知的神经基础研究中心研究员，巴黎索邦大学哲学博士。Machery教授是当前认知科学哲学、实验哲学研究的代表人物之一，在概念理论、进化、文化和认知、实验哲学等领域建树卓越。他的专著Doing Without Concepts（2009）引发哲学和认知科学界的高度关注，其一系列论文发表在Philosophy and Phenomenological Research、Synthese、Philosophy of Science等重要期刊；他还主编、合编了多部牛津哲学手册。
