在约翰·罗尔斯1985年的文章“正义即公平：政治而非形而上学”中，他将对正义的诠释从认识论的方向转为一个更实际和实用主义的政治方向。主讲人认为这一转变是民主理论发展历程中的一个基准点。这一转变将合理性推向了非至善论的方向。随着公共理性代替原初状态成为罗尔斯理论发展中的核心概念之一，宪政成为了共识的基础。讲座以对实用主义转变引发的三个合理性问题的简短讨论收尾，即：非美国背景下的公共理性和宪政问题，非自由主义社会中的民主公民权问题，以及国际法的宪法化问题。
In “Justice as Fairness: Political not Metaphysical” (1985) John Rawls turned from epistemological justification to a more practical, pragmatic orientation toward the political. I argue that this is a benchmark in the development of democratic theory. This turn would result in a non-perfectionist concern with legitimacy. As public reason replaced the original position in Rawls’ development, constitutionalism became the basis for consensus. The lecture concludes with a brief analysis of three legitimacy problems emanating from the pragmatic turn: public reason and constitutionalism beyond it American context, the problem of democratic citizenship in non-liberal societies, and the constitutionalization of international law.

David Rasmussen，美国芝加哥大学博士，现任美国波士顿学院（Boston College）哲学系教授。他是著名学术期刊《哲学与社会批判》的创刊人及主编，同时担任近期创刊的《美国哲学学会期刊》副主编。Rasmussen教授关于尤尔根·哈贝马斯，保罗·利科，以及约翰·罗尔斯的多部学术著作和文章均在学术界内受到高度好评。他现在正在完成一本关于约翰·罗尔斯后期哲学的学术著作。
David M. Rasmussen is a longtime professor of political philosophy at Boston College. He is the founder of the journal Philosophy and Social Criticism, associate editor of the new Journal of the American Philosophical Association, and the author and editor of numerous books and articles on Jurgen Habermas, Paul Ricoeur and John Rawls. He is currently finishing a book on the later work of John Rawls.
