Abstract of the Lecture:

The economic system during the Mao era is called “centrally planned”. How was it functioning in reality and how should it be evaluated from the today’s point of view? We find that there are several reasons why China had to change its economic system from planning to market after it started the reforms and opening-up policy. We discuss the fundamental shortcomings inherent in the previous planning system and talk about the essential dynamics brought about by the present market mechanism. China’ marketization policy employed since 1978 in our view, was a necessary and indispensable choice for its economic development.
