Abstract of the Lecture:
The Song Dynasty is a great era in Chinese history for its fantastic achievements in social economy, national politics and culture, which made it an indispensable link in the study of Chinese history. This lecture focuses on the “bureaucratic administration” of the Song dynasty. The so called bureaucratic administration includes all the procedures relating to officials’ training, selection, appointment, dismissal, management, assessment, rewarding and punishment, and retirement. Special attention will be paid to the influences of the Song political culture and civil service examination on bureaucratic administration, and the relations between the three. The lecture will further discuss the value and significance of the Song bureaucratic administration in modern time.
Brief Introduction of the Lecturer:
Kang Jil Jong, Ph.D. in history, graduated from Chinese Culture University (Taiwan) in 1989. He is now a history professor and the Vice-principle of Education, Dean of Studies, and in Gyeongsang National University, Republic of Korea. Professor Kang’s main fields of study is history of Chinese education and intellectual history. He has published and translated many works on Song education, civil service examination, life of scholar-officials, and the history of China-Korean relations, and made outstanding contributions to these fields. He served as the director of “Association of the History of the Song, Yo, Gum and Won” for many years. Since 2009, he hosted the International Symposium of “Societies, Narratives, and Cultures” for 9 times, under the sponsorship of the Center for f Area Studies, GNU.
